The OECD 440: Uterotrophic Assay in rodents assesses the effects of a chemical on female rodents at two physiological stages in which the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis is not functional and oestrogen sensitivity is heightened. In both prepubescent females and mature females post-ovariectomy, a substance is adminstered orally or subcutaneously for three days before undergoing necropsy to assess increase in uterine weight or uterotrophic response.
